Evangelical Lutheran Church of Juodkrantė

Evangelical Lutheran Church of Juodkrantė

Location: L. Rėzos st 56, Juodkrantė

After a disastrous winter of 1791, when Juodkrantė’s neighbouring village of Karvaičiai was buried under sand, the relocated residents of Karvaičiai began to build a new church in Juodkrantė. Their first wooden church perished in a fire in 1878. After seven more years, Juodkrantė’s lutheran church, a project of Friedrich August Stüler, an influential Prussian architect and builder, was sanctified in August of 1885.

The church can readily be described as a typical fishermen church, with simple yet gracefully grand style. As in the 18th century, most of the parish of Karvaičiai members were native Curonian and Lithuanian fishermen, they only attended Lithuanian mass. In 1920 only 50 church goers out of 367 residents of Juodkrantė attended the Lithuanian mass: such diminishment in numbers finally resulted in the church closing after World War II.

Following a refurbishment in 1976, the church became home to a museum of miniatures. Eventually, in 1988, the church was returned to Evangelical Lutherans, and has been rented out by Roman Catholics since 1989.
