Location: ancient forest in Juodkrantė
To send its light beams into the Baltic sea, Juodkrantė’s lighthouse had to first be built to rise above the high canopies of pines that cover the Hill of Witches. Built in 1953, the stilt-like, square metal structure lifts the grey wood-clad lighthouse to the height of 19.7 metres.
The lamp of the lighthouse is visible 18 nautical miles (33 km) into the Baltic Sea. Its signature beam is on for three seconds and off for five.
Towering above the depth of the Curonian pine forest, the lighthouse of Juodkrantė is often called the most mysterious lighthouse of Lithuania. It can be easily seen from surrounding hilltops and the sea, which starts only 900 m away. To this day, it is a fully functioning nautical navigation object.
The best way to reach the lighthouse is by walking or cycling. Please note the lighthouse is not open to visitors.
