Location: Pervalka
If you are intrigued to see the only lighthouse on the waters of the Curonian Lagoon, head to Pervalka settlement. Opposite the Cape of Horses, visitors are greeted with the oldest lighthouse of Neringa, which opened on November 27, 1900. Mounted on a tiny artificial islet, the 14 metre-high lighthouse is a popular picture-perfect sight for many holidaymakers.
The tower’s light is automated: its white light beams can reach up to 13 kilometres. Once, it was home to a once kerosene-fuelled lamp that used to be topped up daily by boatmen. Today, the lighthouse is fitted with a buoyant light and powered by a photocell. The cone shaped lighthouse stands on a stone foundation, its walls feature metal cladding, topped with a dome shaped tin roof. The interior hosts a metal spiral of stairs leading up to the outdoor terrace.
The nostalgic-looking Pervalka lighthouse had to be rebuilt twice, in 1948 and 1960. Its island was fortified with concrete blocks. The tower was also fully refurbished in 2006.
You can reach the lighthouse by boat or view it from the shores of Pervalka.
