Location: near Preilos st 97, Preila
The most prominent geographic formation of the Curonian Spit, the Great Curonian Spit Ridge, runs north to south almost uninterrupted, apart from the two sites where it was blown and washed away into the waters of the Curonian Lagoon at the Horns of Bulvikis and Birštvynas.
Around Preila’s settlement, the Ridge is almost completely covered by fragrant pine forest: the crests are adorned by mountain pines and the slopes - with Baltic pine, mostly man-planted.
From its 53-metre height, visitors can admire a spectacular scenery of the Baltic sea, the Curonian Lagoon, adjoining dunes and the bay of Preila. For those eagle-eyed enough, there is a chance to spot the Cape of Ventė at the mouth of Nemunas river, and the Horn of Grobštas, which lies in the Kaliningrad area of the Russian Federation.
The dune has a second name of Artists’ Dune, due to its popularity over many decades as an object of landscape painters.
