Location: the Hill of Witches
Take an enchanting forest path, lined with wood sculptures that were erected on the 42 metre high Hill of John (or Eve). It has been a special sight of the summer solstice celebrations, when Juodkrantė would see scores of sailboats and steamboats from neighbouring Tilžė, Rusnė and Klaipėda descend on its shores. Visitors, musicians, dancers and folk artists would head to the hill for a night-long festivity of the ancient traditions and rituals of the shortest night of the year.
The complex was initiated in 1981 by sculptor Steponas Šarapovas and architect Algimantas Nasvytis. During the summers from 1979 to 1981, visiting artisans carved over 80 oak statues, depicting pagan deities and mythical creatures, mainly witches and devils. That’s why the exposition was called “The Hill of Witches”.
