Location: crossroad of G. D.Kuverto st and Nida–Smiltynė road, Nida
Leaning on to the Nida - Smiltynė road, there lies an old cemetery of Neringa’s foresters. In 1864, to commemorate his pioneering effort that saved Nida from the constant threat of sand, a memorial to George David Kuwert was opened.
Kuwert began a first forestation project in 1825, when a nearby dune approached Nida: his sheer enthusiasm and hard work proved that resilience can reign in the almost unstoppable force of nature that threatened to bury the town. G. D. Kuwert died in 1856. He was buried alongside his father David Gottlieb Kuwert in the old cemetery. Local people felt a need to immortalise father and son’s struggle with the elements by funding the arrangement of a monument on their grave. It was modelled and made in Karaliaučius’ (Kaliningrad) Hein factory. The monument is adorned with an amphora at the top, which signifies watering of the trees. The writing on the memorial expresses the gratitude of the local residents for “the forestation of the sad wasteland of Nida.”
