In 1975 commemorating the 200th birth anniversary of Martynas Liudvikas Rėza, sculptor Eduardas Jonušas created a 7-meter-high oak pillar, which he placed at the entrance to the Pervalka settlement on the Birštvynas dune. The face of Rėza carved in a log is facing the dune ridge that buried under the sand the village of Karvaičiai, the birthplace of M. L. Rėza.
The wooden monument has an inscribed poem of Rėza, titled “The Sunken Village”. The pillar is regarded as one of the best works of Jonušas, a remarkably accurate representation of one of the most prominent personalities of the Curonian Spit.
