Sundial-calendar

Sundial-calendar

Location: Parnidis Dune

At the top of the soaring 53 metres Dune of Parnidis, visitors can find an intriguing sundial-calendar. Do not be surprised that the time flies here, studying its many depictions and workings. The centre of the sundial is marked with a 13.8 metre obelisk, which drops a shadow that becomes the arrow of the clock on a sunny day. The obelisk is imprinted with various runic symbols and festive pictograms, taken from an 17th century calendar. The four sculptural figures on the edges of the sundial mark the spring and autumn equinoxes, and the winter and summer solstices. The Dune of Parnidis is the only place in Lithuania that has uninterrupted views of the sun setting and rising into water: from the Curonian Lagoon and into the Baltic Sea.

The sundial-calendar was built in 1995 as a joint creation of architect Ričardas Krištopavičius, sculptor Klaudijus Pūdymas and ethnocosmologist Libertas Klimka. In 1999 the structure was badly damaged during hurricane Anatolius and fully reconstructed in 2011.
