It is said that in the 19th and 20th centuries, ill-behaved women were deported from Mėmelis to the barracks that stood in this valley. They had to plant forest in the dunes.
Another version of the name of this place is that in 1870 the barracks housed some of the French prisoners who worked here, who appeared on the Curonian Spit during the Franco-Prussian War (1870 - 1871). The captive French had to work hard on landscaping the dunes. Local Curonians visited the hard-working French prisoners in the dunes, gave drinks to the strangers, fed them, and it was not forbidden. That was how love stories began...
